Modern House with Contemporary Garden

Working alongside the client and architects, Apt Studios designed and built this contemporary garden to complement and enhance the modern design of this charred larch cladded building. The design was inspired to ground the house in its setting, surrounded by established woodland we incorporated Fagus sylvatica columns (Beech) which are deep green in summer but retain the old brown leaves in winter to provide additional interest throughout the year - complemented by pops of rusty orange corten-steel features dotted throughout the space.
Brick walls and crisp white porcelain steps to the main entrance continue this contemporary theme creating a stunning arrival. With matrix planting creating a whimsical contrast to the building and adding movement, colour and texture with a mixture of grasses, perennials, shrubs and mid height trees to create structure, intrigue and connection to the woodland beyond. The planting bleeds into the graded compressed aggregate paths with long pavers breaking up the space adding contrast and a sense of repetition.
All in all this design has been a great success from initial concept through to build and planting. Working alongside the architects we have created a space that beautifully integrates and connects the house with garden to its environment and the earth. In turn this provides a sense of calm transforming the outdoor space into a sanctuary for relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation. The house now feels connected and grounded creating a sense of space - the strong building design is softened with plant choices, influencing not only the visual appeal but creating tactile experiences for the sense.
